Anemone bulbs

Anemone bulbs

They open as soon as the sun shines.

On arrival the tubers look as if there is nothing left in them: hard, dark and wrinkled. Lay them in water for a night and they swell to almost double. After that the flower pops open on every sunny day and closes again towards evening.

The low anemone you set 4 to 5 cm deep and 5 to 10 cm apart, in a sheltered spot in sun or partial shade. First let the tubers stand in water for a night. In a good spot it comes back every year, and a small group grows into a whole carpet.

The tall anemone wants full sun and soil where water drains well. Plant it 5 to 7 cm deep and about 10 cm apart, after soaking for a full day. Keep the soil slightly moist for the first weeks and cut away spent flowers.

The tall one cannot take our winter. Lift those tubers in autumn and store them dry and cool, then they can join in again in March.

Practical: You plant the low anemone in autumn; it flowers from March to May and grows 10 to 20 cm. The tall one is not hardy here: plant it in March or April, soak the tuber for a full day, and it flowers from about June at 30 to 50 cm.
