Grape hyacinths

Grape hyacinths

Every year there are more.

Grape hyacinths do something odd: their leaves come up in autumn and stand all winter, while the flower only follows in March. Meanwhile they make new bulbs and drop seed, so a small group naturally becomes a carpet. They grow 15 to 20 cm tall and are among the best early flowers for bees.

Hand-selected for quality and size.

Plant from September to November, 5 to 10 cm deep and about 5 cm apart. Close together gives a full carpet. They do well in sun and partial shade, in the ground or in a pot.

There is barely any care. Leave the foliage, also in winter, and leave the little bulbs alone. They do the rest themselves.

Mice and deer leave grape hyacinths alone. Welcome, if other bulbs in your garden keep being dug up.

Practical: Grape hyacinths often arrive with leaves. That is normal. Plant them soon after arrival.
