A shape that almost looks made.


What looks like the flower is a single leaf that curls around a little yellow rod. That rod is the real flower; the coloured sheath sits around it to draw attention. It flowers from June into September or October; the coloured ones grow 30 to 60 cm and the white ones up to 90 cm.

Plant the tubers 5 to 10 cm deep. In the border keep 30 to 45 cm between them. In a pot they can go closer, with one tuber in a pot at least 20 cm wide. From April you can start them indoors, and they will flower earlier outside.


Sun or light shade are both fine, as long as the soil stays moist while they grow. Remove spent flowers.


After the first frost, lift the tubers out of the ground. Let them dry for a day or two and store them cool and frost-free until spring.


Practical: Callas are not hardy here. Do not plant them until the soil is warm, keep the soil moist in summer, and lift the tubers out of the ground in autumn. The whole plant is poisonous, so keep it away from children and pets.
