Description
May brings one grand show: extremely full, ruffled blooms in deep violet-purple-blue. They stand sturdy on strong stems, low and dense, like peonies in tulip form. This is as close to true blue as a tulip gets.
Double Late tulips like Blue Wow are the drama queens of tulip season. They grow compact and robust: no delicate swayers, but steadfast. Place them where you want them to command attention. In front of a dark hedge, or by the house. Or alone in a small group of four or five. They are also excellent cut flowers. That dense fill helps them last well in the vase. The green outer petals contrast beautifully with the violet-blue. Avoid planting in full afternoon sun: the color fades less quickly in part shade.
The Loner. Extremely full and purple-blue, pure May, stands firm and commands all eyes.
